Lizzo adds women's tennis to head coaching responsibilities at alma mater
COLCHESTER, Vt. -- Saint Michael's men's tennis head coach Kevin Lizzo, who graduated from the school in 2002, will also become the head coach of the women's tennis squad, it was announced on Tuesday, effective this fall. The second-winningest coach in men's program history, Lizzo enters his ninth season with the men's team.
Lizzo becomes the third coach to guide the Saint Michael's men's and women's tennis teams simultaneously. George Shaw did so during the 1987-88 and '88-89 school years. Between 1996-97 and 2000-01, Steve LaTulippe led the squads to a combined 74 victories and four postseason wins between.
A former two-year captain and four-year member of the men's tennis team, Lizzo led his alma mater to a Northeast-10 Conference postseason berth four times as the head coach. His Purple Knights have additionally suffered near misses each of the past three seasons, eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons and falling one conference win shy of the sixth and final tournament spot last spring.
Lizzo's teams twice posted a 7-3 league mark, the most conference victories in program annals, while finishing fourth in the NE-10 standings both seasons. He has worked as a tennis professional at Twin Oaks Sports and Fitness in South Burlington, Vt., since 2002, and has also gained experience as a pro at the Burlington Tennis Club and the Quarry Hill Club in South Burlington, and as the varsity assistant coach and junior varsity head coach at Burlington High School.
