Texas 25-year old long jump record broken by Goodwin
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark . -- Texas Men's Track and Field sophomore Marquise Goodwin set the Texas record in the indoor long jump Friday night by leaping 26-8.50 (8.14m) to win the event at the Razorback Invitational. Goodwin's long jump is best for tops in the country this season and shatters a 25-year-old record set by Eric Metcalf (26-0) in 1986. His mark also automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In addition, the sophomore also advanced for the 60-meter semi-finals, running 6.78.
Juniors Trevante Rhodes and Alex Williams also qualified for the 60-meter finals, running 6.83 and 6.85, respectively. Rhodes ran 21.91 in the 200 meters, finishing 23rd while junior Dereck Dreyer finished in 27th, with a 22.01.
Sophomore Keiron Stewart posted a season-best 7.84 in the 60-meter hurdles to qualify for Saturday's finals.
In the field events, senior Jamal Wilson cleared a career-best height of 7-0.50 (2.15m) to finish fourth in the high jump while freshman Mark Thomas took second place in the pole vault, clearing season-best 16-6.75 (5.05m). Casey Wicker placed 10th as he cleared 15-1 (4.60m).
Three Longhorns posted top-10 finishes in the shot put as sophomore Hayden Baillio placed third (59-5.50/18.12m), senior Brandon Drenon took sixth (56-8.50/17.28m) and junior Jacob Thormaehlen placed 10th (54-4.75/16.58m).
In the heptathlon, junior Isaac Murphy currently sits in third as he tallied 3,013 points on the first day of competition. Murphy was the heptathlon's top finisher in the 60 meters, posting a time of 7.04. Murphy achieved personal bests in the long jump (23-2.50/7.07m), shot put (41.11.75/12.78m) and the high jump (6-0.50/1.84m).
Senior Kenny Greaves is in fifth place after running 7.33 in the 60 meters, posting a long jump of 21-7.50 (6.60m), throwing a personal best in the shot put of 42-2.75 (12.87m) and clearing a personal best in the high jump of 6-5 (1.96m).
Freshman Jake Wohlford is one spot behind in sixth. Wohlford posted a 60-meter time of 7.10, long jumped 21-8.75 (6.62m), threw the shot put 33-4 (10.16m) and cleared a height of 6-2.75 (1.90m).
