Pointers notch win at Carthage meet
Carthage (21-8), ranked 23rd in the Jan. 26 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches of America NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field poll and sixth in the Midwest Region, finished fourth at the Friday, Jan. 28 Carthage “Tadd Metzger Invitational” at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis.
Wisconsin-Stevens Points won the 16-team event with 145.50 points, followed by Wisconsin-Oshkosh second at 115, Valparaiso University third at 64, Carthage fourth at 60, St. Norbert College fifth at 47, Concordia University (Wis.) sixth at 52, Wisconsin-Parkside seventh at 44, Ripon College eighth at 40, the Milwaukee School of Engineering ninth at 23, Aurora University and St. Xavier University tied for 10th at 19 each, Concordia University (Chicago) 12th at 17.50, Rockford College 13th at 13, Judson University 14th with nine points, the Greater Milwaukee Track Club 15th with three and Marquette University 16th with two points.
Carthage picked up wins from Marshall Stewart (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) in the 600-meter run (1:23.44) and Prentis Wilbourn (Sr., Racine, Wis./Case) in the triple jump (46-3 ½). Jose Flores (Jr., Round Lake, Ill./Fox Lake-Grant Community) was second in the 600-meter run (1:23.78), as was Cale Brown (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) in the triple jump (46-0 ¼).
Mike Oratowski (Jr., Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn-Glenbard South) finished fourth in the 55-meter high hurdles (8.02), as did Jake Mahaffey (So., Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) in the 3,000-meter run (9:04.03) and Jarrayl Johnson (Sr., Flossmoor, Ill./South Holland-Thornwood) in the shot put (51-10 ¾).
The Red Men travel to Bloomington, Ill., on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 4-5 for the Illinois Wesleyan University “Bob Keck Invitational” at the Shirk Center (3 p.m./11 a.m.).
