Three Lakers hit qualifying marks

No. 6 Grand Valley State has strong showing at Indiana Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Sixth-ranked Grand Valley State completed the Indiana Relays on Saturday at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse and three Lakers hit qualifying marks including Daniel Vanek’s automatic mark in the shot put.

The majority of the teams at the meet were Division I institutions but the Lakers held their own, including five top 10 finishes on the final day of the meet.

Brent VanEnk finished sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.73 seconds while Logan Hoffman had a great showing in the 400 meter dash, finishing in a time of 49.13 seconds, good for third place to tie for the highest Laker finish of the afternoon.

The 4×400 relay team of Nathaniel Hammersmith, Deonte’ Hurst, Mohamed Mohamed and Hoffman finished seventh with a time of 3:18.21, a provisional qualifying mark for the Division II indoor nationals.

Donny Stiffler placed ninth in the shot put invitational event with a mark of 16.98 meters, a provisional qualifying mark.

The lone automatic qualifying mark for the Lakers on the day came from Vanek, who finished third in the shot put invitational with a toss of 18.47 meters. He finished the event as the highest Division II competitor.
