North Central wins Cardinal Classic
Top-ranked Cardinals sweep top four pole vault spots in victory
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Top-ranked North Central (Ill.) raced to its sixth victory of the season on Friday night inside the Al B. Carius Track, sweeping the 11-team field at the Cardinal Classic.
The Cardinals tallied a total of 185 team points to claim the team championship. No. 7 Wisconsin-Platteville finished a close second totaling 160 points while Lewis rounded out the top three with 75 team points.
North Central was paced by first through fourth place finishes in the pole vault as John Wood (17' 2 3/4"), Thomas Stacey (16' 6 3/4"), Josh Winder (16' 2 3/4"), and Frank Wleklinski (15' 11"). Robert Kapustka claimed the top spot in the weight throw (57' 10 1/4") while finishing second in the shot put with a toss of 51' 1/4". In the high jump, Zach Heerspink soared over the competition with a jump of 6' 9 1/2".
On the track, the Cardinals were led by Dan Benton who set a new facility record in the 400-meter dash, crossing the tape in 48.53. Teammate Bai Kabba finished just behind Benton in second place with a time of 49.27. Dionte Hackler edged the field in the 200-meter dash, winning in a time of 22.18. The combination of Benton, Kabba, Hackler and Marlen Hamilton crossed the finish line in 3:18.88, to finish atop the field in the 4x400-meter relay.
In the 3,000-meter run, Ryan Root ran away with first place (8:56.00) while Brent Gaither finished third (9:01.34). Kelvin Guilbault posted a third place finish for the Cardinals in the 5,000-meter run.
