ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The top-ranked Grand Valley State women's track and field team finished up day two of competition at the GVSU Big Meet on Saturday with nine provisional championship qualifying marks and two event victories. Meanwhile, the fifth-ranked men's squad finished with five top-five finishes and three provisional qualifying marks, including a record-breaking performance in the distance medley relay.

For the women, sophomore Brittney Banister was the first event-winner of the day, taking first in the 60 meter dash with a provisional qualifying mark of 7.78 seconds, just sneaking on to the qualifying list.

Another provisional qualifying mark went to junior Kalena Franklin, who followed up her stellar first day of competition with a second-place finish in the 200 meter dash in a qualifying time of 24.79 seconds.

In the field events, sophomore Michaela Lewis won the long jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 5.64 meters (18'6"), a season-best in the event and the second-best long jump mark in Division II by a sophomore this year. Lewis also finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 11.13 meters (36'6.25").

Four more Lakers hit provisional qualifying marks in the weight throw, led by senior Jamie Smith's toss of 17.29 meters (56'8.75") to finish in 11th against a bevy of top competition in the country. She was followed closely behind by freshman Laura Schroeder in 13th (16.99m/55'9"), junior Alyssa Zokoe in 14th (16.72m/54'10.25") and senior Katelyn Fox in 21st (16.29m/53'5.5"), all hitting provisional qualifying marks.

Two different distance medley relay teams were able to hit provisional qualifying marks in the first time that GVSU has run the event this indoor season.

The tandem of sophomore Hannah Osborn, junior Andrea Kober, junior Lisa Galasso and sophomore Jessica Janecke finished second in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:48.00, a provisional qualifying mark and the second-best time in DII this season.

Meanwhile, the all-freshman group of Alison Work, Brittany Terry, Natalie Nelson and Katelyn Cliff finished sixth with a time of 12:01.89, also a provisional mark and currently the sixth-best mark in DII this year.

On the men’s side, distance medley relay team of freshman Ethan Barnes and juniors Nathaniel Hammersmith, Jeremy Wilk and Larry Julson broke the meet record with a time of 9:56.40, but finished second.

The Lakers were the highest-finishing collegiate team, and were beat out only by the Indiana Invaders club team, who won with a building and meet-record time of 9:54.09. - good enough for a provisional qualifying mark and the sixth-best men's distance medley relay time in Division II this season.

The other two provisional qualifying marks and another pair of top-five finishes were accomplished by senior Donny Stiffler in the throws. Stiffler finished fourth in both the shot put (16.01m/52'6.5") and the weight throw (18.30m/60'0.5").

GVSU had a trio of student-athletes finish in the top 10 of the long jump, with junior Steve Revies leading the way after a mark of 6.75 meters (22'1.75"). Sophomore Nathan Fraeyman finished fifth (6.64m/21'9.5"), while new triple jump school record-holder Tendo Lukwago finished 10th (6.39m/20'11.75").

Freshman Lucas Landis had a solid performance in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.95 meters (6'4.75") to finish in 11th against a wealth of top tier competition.
