Molloy outlasts St. Thomas Aquinas for first ECC title in program's fourth year
SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. -- In just its fourth year of existence, Molloy took home the first East Coast Conference Indoor title. Overall, the Lions registered a first-place total of 163 points and edged St. Thomas Aquinas for the crown by just four points.
In the track-related events, Molloy had three individual ECC champions. Seniors Mike McShane and Nick DiBenedetto recorded first-place times of 4:38.68, and 15:48.17 in the mile and 5,000 meter run, respectively. Junior Michael DioGuardi was tops in the 500 meter run after crossing the finish line at 1:10.07.
McShane also joined sophomore Eric Haslbauer and freshmen Conor Gallagher, who was third (4:39.44) as well in the mile, and Mike Darnell to place first in the 4 x 800 meter relay. The quad registered a mark of 8:20.77 in the event.
Junior Louis Gutierrez contributed a second-place showing (7.27) in the 60 meter dash and a fourth-place effort (24.14) in the 200 meter dash, while freshman Tyler Capozzoli came in second in the 800 meter run with a 1:59.38 clocking. Lastly, in the 400 run, freshman Desmond Guidroz took fourth, posting a time of 53.05.
In the field events, junior Joe Johnson won in the triple jump with a leap of 13.09 meters. Guidroz placed just behind him with a second-place distance of 12.97 meters. He was also third (6.32 meters) in the long jump. Sophomore Charles Artino rounded things out for Molloy with a school-record fourth-place heave (12.95 meters) in the shot put.
