LEWISBURG, Pa. — Junior Neely Spence won the mile and 3K on Saturday afternoon inside Gerhard Fieldhouse while senior Erica Hess posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 400 meters as the Shippensburg women’s indoor track and field team finished third at the Bucknell Heptagonal.
“We’re very pleased with where we are at right now,” head coach Dave Osanitsch said after the meet. “We have a long way to go yet, but the pieces are there for us to have a successful year.”
Spence posted PSAC qualifiers with her two victories and was matched stride for stride in the mile by teammate Abby Huber. The duo finished within four-hundredths of a second of one another with times of 4:59.46 and 4:59.50.
Hess posted a time of 57.63 seconds in the 400 that is especially impressive knowing that the team returned Tuesday from a 30-plus day layoff and only had just four practices before Saturday’s meet. She was also a part of the 4×400-meter relay squad that placed third in 3:59.42. Junior Amanda Raudabaugh was also a part of that relay and finished second in the 800-meter run.
Sophomore Caitlin Stuetz finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles and posted a time of 9.15 seconds. Fellow sophomore Maisie Aumiller also had a good day in sprint competition as the team’s pacesetter in the 60 and 200-meter dashes.
Senior Jamie McCollum posted a 1K time of 3:00.82 and figures this season to challenge the school record in the event that is currently held by Huber. Sophomore Ashley Fornshell finished fifth in the 1K and ran on the 4×800-meter relay squad that finished second.
Junior Lauren Redington paced the jumpers and senior Stephanie Harrison paced the throwers; both women met multiple PSAC standards in Saturday’s competition.
Shippensburg has another big week in store, with competitions scheduled at three different venues over the course of the next seven days.
The multis competitors will be at Princeton on Tuesday and Wednesday.
SU’s DMR squad will be amongst the group of university athletes in competition on Friday and Saturday at the Penn State National Invitational.
A third group will return to Bucknell on Friday and Saturday for competition in the BU Open.
