JHU shows well over weekend

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Johns Hopkins women's indoor track & field team secured five first-place finishes on Saturday at the McElligot Invitational in Haverford, PA. There was no team scoring in the event.
Junior Cecilia Furlong and freshman Lara Shegoski each followed up last night's performance at the PSU National Invitational with an individual title at McElligot. Furlong won the mile run with a time of 5:12.69, while Shegoski captured the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:29.16.
Freshmen Lily Murphy and Shayna Rose also found their way into the top-20 in the mile, placing 14th and 16th with times of 5:35.93 and 5:37.63, respectively. Fellow freshman Frances Dougherty was the next Blue Jay to finish following Shegoski in the 3000-meters, taking ninth place at 11:00.99.
Sophomore Emily Kashka won the pole vault with a vault of 10 feet, 6 inches (3.20m), while senior Logan Ashcraft secured third with a vault of 10 feet (3.05m).
The other individual champion of the day for Hopkins was sophomore Alana Merkow, who was tops in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 3.5 inches (11.67m). Freshman Emily Swenson took fourth in the shot put at 35 feet, 2.5 inches (10.73m).
The other JHU first-place finish was secured by the JHU "A" 4x400 meter relay team, while several other Blue Jays finished near the top in their respective events.
Sophomore Alexa Tzaferos finished third in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.94, while freshmen Chloe Ryan (5th/7.73) and Alexis Johnson (8th/7.77) placed top-10 in the 55 meter dash.
Sophomore Amelia Vallenilla took fifth in both the 200 meter (27.53) and 400 meter (1:02.77) dash , while Ryan placed seventh in the 200 meters at 27.79.
Sophomore Kristin Spera placed fifth in the long jump at 15 feet, 4.25 inches (4.68m).
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 5 at the Haverford Keough Invitational.
