Amherst dominates Tartan Invitational
Bates wins four events to lead Lord Jeffs to first-place finish
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- No. 25 Amherst won 12 events on Saturday at Smith's Tartan Invitational, giving the Lord Jeffs a convincing first-place finish.
Amherst earned 278 points and was followed by Smith (156), Mount Holyoke (126) and Wellesley (69).
Naomi Bates once again stood out for Amherst by winning four events. Her best performance came in the 60-meter dash, as her winning time of 7.86 seconds was good enough for a personal best and an NCAA provisional qualifying cut.
Bates also won the 60-meter hurdles (9.55), long jump (5.14m) and triple jump (10.74m), as she was the only competitor to eclipse five meters in the long jump. Teammate Jess Mueller placed second in both the triple jump (10.22m) and the high jump (1.43m), while Jordan Roehl was third in the shot put (10.61m).
Shyloe Jones gave Amherst a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.98 seconds, followed closely by Abraelle Shirley in second place (28.04). Shirley also placed second behind Bates in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.22 seconds.
Amherst also excelled in the distance and mid-distance events. Keri Lambert won the mile run in 5:05.09 and placed second in the 800 (2:20.17), while Ellen Richmond edged the field in the 600 with a new personal record (1:44.01).
Lauren Almeida and Melissa Sullivan posted the top two times in the 1,000-meter run (3:02.21, 3:04.04), while Elodie Reed won the 5k by nearly 40 seconds (18:47.52). Amherst’s most successful event was the 3k, where Kristen Moulton (10:52.86), Abby Hopper (10:54.37) and Jessie Kaliski (10:57.71) led the Jeffs to a 1-2-3 finish.
The Jeffs also picked up a pair of relay victories, as Jones and Shirley teamed up with Jade McKnight and Beth Hall for a winning time of 1:49.83 in the 4x200. Joining Almeida and Lambert for a win in the 4x800 were sophomores Amy Dao and Lisa Walker, with the Jeffs completing the race in 9:48.05.
