NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- No. 14 Wisconsin-La Crosse opened its 2013 indoor season with a victory at the North Central Cardinal Open on Friday. The Eagles finished with 185 team points while No. 2 UW-Oshkosh was second with 135. The Illinois-Chicago placed third (87) followed by No. 15 North Central (Ill.) (83), Carthage (37), Aurora (29), St. Norbert (24), Elmhurst (12) and Wheaton (Ill.) (11).

UW-L's Kayla Ashland and Corissa Conard each won an individual title. Ashland captured the high jump (5-3 1/4) while Conard took the 5,000-meter run (18:13.02).

The Eagles also won the 4x400-meter relay (3:57.33) with Shannon Klein, Rebecca Scheuermann, Claire Gordee and Claire Elliott.

Other top finishes in the field events for the Eagles included Bailey Alston placing second in the long (18-3 3/4) and triple (36-9) jumps while Lizzie Matson finished fourth (17-11) and Gordee seventh (17-4 1/4) in the long jump. Jamie Ludwigson was third (36-3) and Sabrina Morgan seventh (34-11) in the triple jump.

Alston also finished second (7.94) in the 60-meter dash.

Crystal Oravis was fourth (5-0 1/4) in the high jump.

The Eagles recorded four of the top-seven finishes in the pole vault, including Erika Whitson who placed second (11-0 3/4) and Meaghan Howell third (11-0 3/4). Summer Tietz finished sixth (10-0 3/4) and Maddison Norlin seventh (10-0 3/4).

UW-L's Nicole Flackey placed third (52-5 1/4), Kelly Connor sixth (48-2 3/4) and Taylor Hoppe eighth (46-1 1/4) in the weight throw with Kayla Brown finishing fifth (41-8 1/2) in the shot put.

Kayla Murphy and Elizabeth Composto took home the only two victories of the evening for host North Central.  Murphy won the 200-meter dash (26.20) and also placed fourth in the 60-meter dash (8.00).
