CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Selected members from La Verne took part in the 2011 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational with several standout performances, most notably in the sprints and relay events on Saturday at Strehle Track.
A strong contingent of athletes was on hand for the meet as several Division I, II, III competitors along with NAIA and open participants made for competitive events throughout the day.
The Leopard 4 x 400 meter relay team of Marcus Fortugno, Chancise Watkins, Michael Sacoto and Kyle Quintero turned in a first-place performance with a clocking of 3:19.26, winning the event by nearly two seconds as Southern Utah claimed second place in 3:21.24. Included was a 46.9 relay split from Fortugno.
The duo of Fortugno and Watkins teamed with Paul Turner and Ray Del Rio to finish third in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 41.65. The Leos placed behind Cal State Bakersfield (41.43) and Cal Poly Pomona (41.56).
Fortugno ran his first open 100 meters of the season and broke 11 seconds with a 10.86 performance to place sixth overall. He returned to compete in the 200 meters and finished second in that event with a 21.62.
Paul Turner, already an NCAA automatic qualifier in the long jump, collected a top-5 finish by placing fifth in that event with a leap of 22-8.
