ABILENE, Texas – For the second consecutive season McMurry has debuted as the No. 1 team in the nation according to the initial poll released by the USTFCCCA after a quick start to the outdoor season.
The poll is based on computer rankings of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association for the 2011 NCAA Division III outdoor track & field season. McMurry was on top based soley on meet results from the first weeks of the outdoor season.
The War Hawks provisionally qualified 11 different athletes Saturday in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Open. Among the other provisional marks that McMurry has set this season, the War Hawks, through Saturday, have the top time in the nation in the 100-meter race (Kenneth Turner), the 400-meter hurdles (Terry Smith), and the 4X400-meter relay race (Smith, Kevin Cunningham, Phillip Harris, Bryce Williamson).
McMurry’s men won the 2008 NCAA III Outdoor Track & Field national title, placed second in 2009 and eighth in 2010. The War Hawks ranked No. 1 nationally last year in the first USTFCCCA poll of the outdoor season.
