Texas' Drenon Takes College Discus At Penn Relays
April 25, 2009
PHILADELPHIA Texas junior Brandon Drenon won the college section of the discus highlighting No. 10 Texas¹ performances at the 115th running of the Penn Relays on Friday. The distance medley relay of seniors Kyle Miller and Jake Morse, sophomore Andre Thomas and freshman Patrick Todd finished third, while freshman Trevante Rhodes posted the eighth-fastest time in the 100 meters to qualify for Saturday¹s final.
Drenon posted a throw of 54.04m (177-3) to take the event. His winning throw was just six inches shy of his personal best, which he set earlier this season at the Texas Relays. Drenon¹s mark of 54.04m would have been good for seventh place in the championship section of the discus.
The DMR clocked a 9:34.90 to place third. Miller opened with the 1,200-meter leg for the Longhorns and handed off to Thomas for the 400. Todd handled the 800-meter leg and Morse anchored (1,600m). The Longhorns entered the meet as the three-time defending DMR champions at the prestigious relays meet.
Rhodes was the final qualifier for the 100-meter final on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. He used a 10.64 to finish fourth in the third of three heats.
Sophomore Devon Bond took third in the college high jump with a clearance of 2.04m (6-8.25).
