No. 17 UW-Platteville finishes third in home invite behind five events wins
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- No. 17 UW-Platteville hosted the Division III national meet of the week in which some of the best teams in the nation competed on Saturday. The Pioneers won five event titles to finish third overall in the men's competition.
No. 2 UW-Oshkosh came in first with 160, while No. 4 UW-La Crosse finished second with 151.5 and UW-Platteville finished third with 110.5 ahead of No. 6 UW-Eau Claire, No. 3 UW-Whitewater, No. 13 UW-Stevens Point, No. 16 Wartburg and No. 9 UW-Stout.
Junior T.J. Valley won the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.51 seconds. Matt Ziegler won the 400-meter dash from the second heat with a time of 49.03 seconds.
"Ziegler had two awesome races," head track and field coach Chris Rotzenberg said. "He competed well in the open 400-meter dash, and also had a great split in the 4x400-meter relay, which ultimately ended up winning."
The 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of senior Aaron Hrubes, junior Patrick Kessenich, Valley and Ziegler, took first place in a time of 3.17.18.
Kessenich also took second place in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 57.04 seconds.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of seniors Jordan Olp and Casey Goffinet, freshman Caleb Mertens and Hrubes, captured first place with a time of 41.78.
Andrew Kissner took third in the high jump with a mark of 6-4 3/4.
Chas Spangenberg took fourth in the pole vault with a height of 15-2 1/4.
Jacob Dailey took fifth in the hammer throw, with a throw of 172-2.
Finishing the meet with javelin, sophomore Dan Poh and senior Mark Niemann captured first and second places.
