Behind Soles' strong performance, Pittsburg State takes home MIAA title
HAYS, Kan. -- Pittsburg State used a balanced scoring attack to grab an early lead on Saturday and ride it to a double-digit victory on Sunday, winning the school's second MIAA Outdoor Championship in a row.
The Gorillas compiled 145 points in the meet, besting second-place Missouri Southern (134.5) by 10.5 points. Pitt State captured the program's ninth MIAA title.
Keenan Soles scored 20.5 points on Sunday to help pace Pitt State. Soles finished second in the 200 meters (21.17) and fourth in the 100m (10.52) and triple jump (48-11), while helping to lead the Gorillas' 400m relay of Jason Crow, Greg Wright and Kyle Utsey, to an MIAA title (40.89). He also scored eight points on Saturday with an MIAA runner-up finish in the long jump (24-7.75), finishing the meet with 28.5 points to earn the men's High Point Scorer honor.
Adam Volkert finished as the MIAA runner-up in the 1,500m in 3:55.89, while Marquise Cushon placed second in the triple jump (50 feet-10 in.).
Talon Thompson earned All-MIAA honors with a third-place finish in the steeplechase (9:25.54) and Ryan Ramler placed third in the 400m hurdles (53.06).
Adam Farnow also placed third in the javelin (195-10), while Derek Base finished fourth in the discipline (190-5).
