Murphy's hammer sets school record
Grand Valley St. has three of top 5 in 3,000-meter steeplechase
Oxford, Ohio - Grand Valley State competed at the Miami (OH) Invitational on Saturday evening. The Lakers finished seventh with a team total of 48.5 points, while Liz Murphy set a new school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw. The Lakers will compete next Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
Murphy earned a first place finish and set the new school record with a mark of 200' 10". Three other Lakers hit the NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw as Katelyn Fox recorded a distance of 170' 11", followed by Alyssa Zokoe with a throw of 167' 9" and Jamie Smith with a mark of 163' 9".
GVSU also had two student-athletes hit automatic marks in the shot put. Sam Lockhart finished fifth with a distance of 49' 1 3/4", while Lauren Buresh followed in sixth with a distance of 48' 10". Lockhart also recorded an eighth place finish in the discus with a mark of 149' 7".
In the high jump, Jennifer Fuller finished fourth with a jump of 5' 4 1/4, while Alisha Weaver placed seventh (5' 2 1/4"). Two Lakers hit provisional marks in the pole vault, while Kristen Hixson earned fourth (12'7.5") and Jocelyn Kuksa tied for sixth (12' 1 1/2").
In the running events, Kayla Vallar and Chanelle Caldwell recorded NCAA provisional marks in the 400-meter dash. Vallar crossed the finish line seventh with a time of 55.71, while Chaldwell followed in eighth at 55.72. Jade Hull finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.46, while freshman Kalena Franklin crossed with a time of 14.84. Andrea Kober placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a provisional mark of 1:02.78, followed by Lisa Galasso in eighth (1:04.23).
The 4x100-meter relay team of Autumn Lantz, Amber Triner, Serena Black and Alieen Lemanski, finished sixth with a time of 48.51. Brittney Jackson took 11th place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.44, while Lantz placed 15th (12.55).
The Lakers also competed at the Bulldog Invitational at Ferris State on Saturday in Big Rapids, Mich. GVSU recorded a first place finish from Sara Parks in the 3,000-meter run. Parks crossed the finish line with a time of 10:23.18, while Sarah Gryniewicz placed fourth, Kelcie Severson in sixth, Molly Slavens in seventh and Courtney Brewis in ninth. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Rebecca Winchester finished second (10:57.6), followed by Karie McDonald in third (11:04.9) and Jessie Vickers in fourth (11:13.4).
In the 100-meter dash, Chelsea Heyne recorded a fourth-place finish with a time of 12.79, followed by Rachel Zeppa in sixth (13.24) and Olivia Holwerda in seventh (12.98). Emma Breen crossed the finish line fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.34, while the 4x100-meter relay team of Holwerda, Breen, Heyne and Zeppa, earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 50.50.
