RPI sweeps Liberty League titles
CANTON, N.Y. -- Three Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student athletes earned Performer of the Meet honors to lead the Engineers to their third consecutive sweep of the Liberty League Championships, this afternoon. The RPI men won by a 99-point margin against host St. Lawrence, while the women’s squad edged the Saints by nine, for the top spot.
Pacing the men’s terrific showing were junior Austin Drexler and senior Ja’Mar Watson (Baltimore, MD/Glenlg), who were named Track Performer and Field Performer of the Meet, respectively. Drexler took home victories in the 100m dash in 11.26 seconds and the long jump (6.52m). He also finished second in high jump (1.84), falling in a jump off to teammate and freshman Stephen Silber.
Watson earned an NCAA Provisional mark in the hammer throw with his meet-winning toss of 55.05m (180-07). He also won the discus throw with a distance of 41.16m and was second in the shot put, with a 12.17m effort.
Other standouts on the men’s side, which finished with 275 points, included graduate student Alec Marshall, who won the 110m hurdles in 15.05 seconds and junior Christopher Chang, who was victorious in the pole vault at a height of 4.57m.
The women’s side saw sophomore Lindsey Rappleyea earn Field Performer of the Meet after winning the long jump (4.88m), triple jump (10.97m) and high jump (1.51m). Teammate Cheryl Tran tied for the high jump title with Rappleyea.
Sophomore Kirsten Orrell earned the win in the shot put with a throw of 11.8m, while senior Missy Steciuk took first in the 100m hurdles in a time of 16.96. Classmate Danielle Cohen won the 800m run in 2:27.17 and freshman Janice Galejs captured the 200m dash (28.26).
Both squads are back in action next weekend, when they participate in the All-America Meet in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
