COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State (1-4) men’s volleyball team posted a 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-25) victory over fourth-ranked (Division III) Juniata (0-1) Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. OSU’s John Klanac scored a career-high 13 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 11 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks. Eagle Dan Powers had a team-high 12 points with eight kills, two solo blocks and four assist blocks.

 

Game one opened with a Juniata error and a Klanac kill for a 2-0 Buckeye lead. Two kills from Chris Vrooman tied the match at two. Ohio State scored the next four points to open a 6-2 lead. The run began with a Shawn Sangrey kill. Two blocks from Kevin Heine and Sangrey and a Sangrey solo block completed the run. The Buckeyes held the lead and reached game point with a Sangrey kill at 29-21. An OSU error stopped the first game point at 29-22. An Eagle kill from Zach Wanner stopped the second game point at 29-23. A Juniata service error ended the game at 30-23 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .452 for the game to .195 for Eagles.

 

A Sangrey kill gave Ohio State a 1-0 lead in game two. A Vrooman-Evan Halteman block tied the game at one. The Buckeyes regained the lead at 2-1 with a Robbie Klein kill. Two Spurlock-Sangrey blocks and a Juniata error opened a 5-1 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes built a 10-point lead at 27-17 to force a Juniata time out. A Dan Powers-Craig Harvey block and a Powers solo block made it 27-19. Steven Kehoe, with a kill, gave the Buckeyes a 28-19 lead. Juniata, with kills from Powers and Harvey, a Powers-Vrooman block and an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to five at 28-23. Ohio State reached game point at 29-23 with a Klein kill. The Eagles stopped the first game point with a Zach Wanner kill at 29-24. A Heine kill ended the game at 30-24 for the Buckeyes to give them a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .119 in the game to .000 for Juniata.

 

At a 6-6 tie in game three, a Juniata error and a Klanac kill put the Buckeyes ahead, 8-6. At 10-8, a Juniata error, a Klanac solo block and a Heine-Klanac block gave Ohio State a 13-8 lead. The Buckeyes built the lead to six at 26-20. Kills from Vrooman and Klein made it 27-21, OSU. A Buckeye error and a Vrooman-Powers block cut the OSU lead to four at 27-23. An Eagle service error made it 28-23. Ohio State reached match point at 29-23 with a Spurlock ace serve. Buckeye errors stopped two match points to make the score, 29-25. Ohio State closed out the game with a Klanac kill at 30-25 to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .147 for the game to .132 for Juniata.

 

Ohio State hit .224 for the match to .115 for Juniata. The Buckeyes had a 45-38 advantage in kills and a 40-35 margin in assists. Kehoe recorded a match-high 34 assists in the contest while Matt Werle had 33 for Juniata. OSU had a 3-1 margin in aces while Juniata recorded 16 service errors to 12 for Ohio State. Defensively, Ohio State had a 40-32 advantage in digs with Juniata’s Anthony Damiano collecting a match-high 18 and OSU’s Mik Berzins recording a team-high 13. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 13.5 to eight margin in team blocks. OSU’s Sangrey posted a match-high eight blocks with a solo and seven assists.

 

Ohio State returns to the road next Sunday at 4 p.m. to face St. Francis (Pa.) (2-0).
