COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State (0-3 overall) men’s volleyball team closed out play at the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii with a 3-1 (30-16, 30-27, 24-30, 30-25) loss to fifth-ranked Penn State (2-1). OSU’s Ted Schoenfeldt posted a team-high 18 points with 13 kills, three ace serves and four assist blocks. John Klanac added 17 points with 16 kills and an ace serve for the Buckeyes. Penn State’s Max Lipsitz recorded a match-high 20 points with 15 kills, one solo block and eight assist blocks. Joe Sunder added 19.5 points with 17 kills and five assist blocks.
Ohio State opened game one with a Kevin Heine kill. Penn State, with kills from Will Price and Sunder, two OSU errors and a Tom Comfort block built a 5-1 lead. The Buckeyes would come within two, twice, before an eleven-point Penn State run gave the Nittany Lions a 25-12 lead. PSU reached game point at 29-14 with a kill from Comfort. A Nittany Lion error and a Steven Kehoe ace serve stopped two game points to make it 29-16. PSU won the game, 30-16, with an Ian Hendries-Sunder block. The Nittany Lions hit .400 for the game to -.118 for the Buckeyes.
Game two, with an OSU kill from John Tholen was tied for the seventh time at 17. An OSU error and a Lipsitz kill gave Penn State a 19-17 lead. The Nittany Lions held a 27-24 lead before a PSU error and a Tholen kill cut the margin to one at 27-26. A Buckeye error and a kill from Lipsitz made it game point Penn State at 29-26. The Buckeyes stopped the game point with a Klanac kill at 29-27. The Nittany Lions closed out the game, 30-27, with a Lipsitz kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Penn State hit .474 for the game to .400 for Ohio State.
Two Schoenfeldt kills and a Buckeye error opened game three to give OSU a 2-1 lead. Ohio State never trailed in the game, building a seven-point lead at 19-12. Trailing 28-21, an OSU error, a Comfort block and a Hendries kill cut the Ohio State lead to four at 28-24. The Buckeyes reached game point at 29-24 with a Mike Stefani kill. A Tholen-Schoenfeldt block closed out the game for the Buckeyes at 30-24 to make it 2-1 Penn State in the match. Ohio State hit .212 for the game to -.031 for Penn State.
Game four saw 13 ties and five lead changes. Ohio State held a 20-17 lead before kills from Price and Lipsitz and a Lipsitz-Comfort block tied the game at 20. A Sunder kill, a Lipsitz-Price block and an OSU error gave Penn State a 23-20 lead. The Nittany Lions held the lead reaching match point at 29-24 off an OSU error. The Buckeyes stopped a match point with a Stefani kill at 29-25. A Hendries-Sunder block closed out the game at 30-25 to give Penn State a 3-1 victory. The Nittany Lions hit .344 in the game to .143 for Ohio State.
Penn State hit .299 for the match to .169 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 57-54 margin in kills with each team recording eight ace serves. PSU’s Comfort recorded a match-high four aces. OSU gave up 19 service errors to 17 for Penn State. Nittany Lion Edgardo Goas posted a match-high 49 assists in the match with OSU’s Kehoe recording 46. Defensively, the Nittany Lions had a 47-40 advantage in digs with PSU’s Dennis Del Valle collecting a match-high 18. OSU’s Mik Berzins recorded a team-high 15 digs. At the net, the Nittany Lions had a 16-11.5 margin in team blocks. Lipsitz posted a match-high nine blocks with one solo and eight assists. Kehoe recorded a team-high six assist blocks for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State returns home for a 7 p.m. Friday match against IPFW (2-0) to open play in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
