MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 7 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team was upset by No. 12 UC San Diego in four games (33-31, 30-28, 23-30, 30-25) in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at Firestone Fieldhouse on Wednesday.
The Tritons (2-4 overall, 1-2 MPSF) claimed their first-ever win over the Waves (1-3, 1-2) in 38 meetings. It was Pepperdine’s 2010 home opener.
Freshman opposite Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) led Pepperdine with a season-high 27 kills. Senior middle blocker Rodnei Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/BYU) added 15 kills while junior middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had 13 kills and eight blocks.
Junior setter Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had 68 assists and helped Pepperdine to a .353 team hitting percentage. The Tritons were slightly better at a .362 clip.
UCSD got 20 kills from Frank Fritsch, 19 from Jason Spangler and 13 from Will Ehrman.
The Tritons scored the first three points of the opening game and led for much of it, though Pepperdine evened the score several times. The Waves trailed by four at 24-20 but came back to tie it up after a kill by Jaynes and three straight Triton attack errors. Pepperdine eventually took its first lead of the game at 27-26 after a kill by Torres. Though Pepperdine served twice on game point, UCSD would reclaim the advantage and tied at 31, the Tritons ended the game on kills by Ehrman and Phil Bannan. Torres had nine kills in the first game and the Waves actually had a .343-.289 hitting edge.
Pepperdine led by one point for the first third of the second game and was last up 10-9. But the Tritons scored the next three points on a kill by Fritsch and two Wave attack errors. The Waves tied it up at 13-13 after kills by Jaynes and Torres and again at 14-14, but a kill by Fritsch and a block by Calvin Ross and Spangler put the Tritons ahead to stay. Down 29-28, the Waves had a swing to tie it up again, but the Tritons got the dig and ended the game on a kill by Ehrman. Pepperdine’s hitting stayed consistent at .342, but UCSD’s rose to .500 in the second game.
The Waves took command of the third game right from the get-go. They scored four straight points on a kill and a service ace by Jaynes, a Triton attack error and a solo block by junior outside hitter Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) to make it 5-1. UCSD got no closer than two points the rest of the game. Riecks and Jaynes had five kills apiece as the Waves enjoyed a .467-.233 hitting edge.
Although Pepperdine broke out to a 4-2 lead in the fourth set, the Tritons went on an 8-1 run and never trailed again. Five different UCSD players had kills during the run and Fritsch added a service ace. The Waves got back to within one point at 17-16 after two straight kills by Torres. The teams traded sideouts for a while and the Waves could never get the point they needed to tie it up. At 25-24, a kill by Bannan and a block by Ross made it a three-point margin, and at 27-25, the Tritons scored the final three points of the match. UCSD outhit Pepperdine .417-.273 in the fourth game.
Pepperdine continues MPSF play at home on Saturday (Jan. 23) against Long Beach State at 7 p.m.
