COLUMBUS, Ohio — The third-ranked Ohio State completed a two-match sweep at Grand Canyon with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-16) win Monday in Antelope Gymnasium.
OSU’s Grayson Overman posted a match-high 12 points with eight kills (.727), two solo and four assist blocks. Mik Berzins and John Klanac added 10.5 points each. Berzins had a co-match-high nine kills (.467), one ace serve and one assist block.
Grand Canyon’s Ben Ponnet recorded a team-high 10.5 points with a co-match-high nine kills (.278), a solo and one assist block. Jordon Tarantino added 8.5 points with seven kills (.188), one ace serve and one assist block. The Buckeye win extended OSU’s winning streak to 17 matches.
Set one was tied at two when kills from Overman and Klanac and an Antelope error gave Ohio State a 5-2 lead. Keith Smith with a kill made it 5-3. A Klanac kill and three Grand Canyon errors gave OSU (17-2 overall, 10-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) a six-point lead at 9-3.
A Buckeye error and a Smith ace serve made it 9-5. At 12-8, an Antelope error and a kill from Overman made it 14-8. Trailing, 15-9, Grand Canyon kills from Jake Wekell and Tarantino and a Tarantino ace serve cut the lead to three at 15-12.
At 17-14, OSU expanded the lead with three GCU errors, kills from Berzins and Jason Tobkin and an Overman solo block to lead 23-14. A Wekell kill made it 23-15. An Antelope error gave Ohio State set point at 24-15. A Ben Hunt kill stopped the set point at 24-16. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Berzins, won the set 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .562 for the set to .111 for Grand Canyon.
Tied at three in set two, a Galliano kill and ace serve gave Grand Canyon a 5-3 lead. An Antelope error and a Kevin Heine kill tied the set at five. An OSU error and a Hunt kill gave the Antelopes a 7-5 lead. Two Grand Canyon errors tied the set at seven. Back-to-back ace serves from Klanac and a kill by Berzins gave OSU a 10-7 lead.
Trailing, 16-13, kills from Wekell and Ponnet and a Tarantino-Wekell block tied the set at 16. Tied at 17, Ohio State took a 19-17 lead with a kill from Heine and a Berzins-Heine block. A Buckeye error made it 19-18. A Berzins kill and an Antelope error gave OSU a 21-18 lead. A Tarantino kill and a Grand Canyon error made it 22-19.
A solo block by Overman and a Mike Stefani-Overman block gave Ohio State set point at 24-19. A Ponnet kill stopped the set point at 24-20. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-20, with a Grand Canyon error to take a 2-0 lead in the match. For the set, OSU hit .320 to .097 for the Antelopes (8-17, 0-6).
Ohio State opened set three with a Steven Kehoe ace serve. At 4-3, two Grand Canyon errors and a Kehoe-Heine block made it 7-3.
Kills from Wekell and Hunt cut the lead to 10-8 before three Antelope errors and an Overman kill opened a 14-8 Buckeye lead. At 16-10, an OSU error and a kill by Smith made it a four-point lead before a Klanac kill and two Grand Canyon errors made it 19-12.
Trailing 20-13, a solo block and kill from Ponnet cut the OSU lead to five at 20-15. Buckeye kills from Berzins and Overman and an Antelope error gave OSU a 23-15 lead before a Wekell kill made it 23-16. Ohio State reached match point at 24-16 with a kill from Berzins. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-16, with an ace serve from Berzins to win the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .471 for the set to .067 for Grand Canyon.
The Buckeyes hit .431 for the match to .091 for Grand Canyon.
