SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Seventh-ranked UCLA kept its winning streak alive by traveling on the road and defeating the UC San Diego Tritons by the score of 3-0.
The Bruins improved to 15-9 on the year and are now back to .500 in MPSF play at 8-8. The win was also UCLA’s seventh in a row and improved the school’s record against the Tritons to 49-3 all-time. Game scores were 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21.
UCLA took the first set by the score of 25-20 but had a much tougher time in the second, as UC San Diego got the early lead and eventually went up 13-9. But the Bruins fought back and took six of the next seven points to regain the lead. The rest of the set went back and forth with score eventually becoming deadlocked at 23-23. But the Bruins would finally prevail 25-23 behind back-to-back kills by freshman Gonzalo Quiroga. They would then go on to win the third set 25-21 to complete the sweep of the Tritons.
Quiroga led the Bruins in kills with 12 on the night while also contributing 4 digs and 1 ace, good for a team leading 13.0 points. Junior Weston Dunlap was right behind him with 10 kills in the victory. Juniors Kyle Caldwell and Thomas Amberg had a huge night at the net, recording 7 block assists each with Amberg getting a solo block as well. Finally, senior Tom Hastings had a game-high 10 digs while junior Alex Scattareggia chimed in with 32 assists.
Overall, the Bruins hit .346 as a team while the Tritons hit just .207. Carl Eberts led UC San Diego with 14 kills.
The Bruins will be back on the court on March 30 against the UC Irvine Anteaters at the Bren Center in Irvine, Calif. Gametime is slated for 6:00 p.m. PT. The two teams met earlier in the week at Pauley Pavilion with Bruins sweeping the Anteaters 3-0 in the final game in Pauley Pavilion before the renovations take place.
