LA JOLLA, Calif. — No. 14 Loyola (Ill.) notched its first win of the 2012 season when it defeated UC San Diego 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 27-25) on Wednesday night. The Ramblers improve to 1-3 on the season while the Titans fall to 1-2.
UC San Diego jumped to a 6-1 after the whistle, forcing Loyola to take a timeout and regroup. The Ramblers did just that, evening the score at seven with kills from Mike Bunting and Eric Daliege, and taking the lead with two service aces from Joseph Smalzer. Points were traded until a six-point run gave the Ramblers a 24-17 lead and their first set point. The Tritons closed the gap to 24-21 before Danny Podkowa sealed the win with a kill.

Set two was a tighter race, with neither team holding greater than a two-point advantage until late in the game. An attack error by UCSD’s Vaun Lennon put the Ramblers up 19-16. With the score set at 24-21, the Titans fought off two set points before a service error by Carl Eberts ended the game, 25-23.
Late in the third, three consecutive errors from the Titans gave the Maroon and Gold its first lead of the set at 15-14. Once again, the teams traded leads back-and-forth until the final points. A kill by Sebastian Brady put the Titans in position to call for a fourth set, but a kill by Daliege kept the Ramblers silenced the comeback. UCSD committed two hitting errors to hand the Ramblers the 27-25 win.
Smalzer and Bunting paced the Rambler offense with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Podkowa tallied eight kills while Daliege added six to the team total. Setter Matt Mirick collected 35 assists on the match. Dainis Berzins and Peter Jasaitis played for six digs apiece to lead the defense. As a team, Loyola triggered a .325 hitting percentage in the match.
