Wolter

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Robert Wolter, who has been an assistant men's and women's volleyball coach at Carthage the last three seasons, has been named head men's volleyball coach at Vassar. The announcement was made by Kim Culligan, the Acting Director of Athletics during Sharon Beverly's spring semester sabbatical.

Wolter is the 11th head coach in program history. He takes over for Jonathan Penn, who will now solely coach the Vassar women's volleyball team.

This past season, Wolter assisted with the Carthage men's team that finished with a 23-11 record and finished third in the Molten Invitational National Championships for a second consecutive year. He was part of a coaching staff that had two American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Second-Team All-Americans and the national Freshman of the Year. In the 2010 season as an assistant with the women's team, Wolter helped Carthage earn a Midwest-III Conference Tournament Championship, earn a third place finish in the Central Region and finish the second ranked in the AVCA top-ten.

"I would like to thank Kim Culligan, who chaired the search committee, for the hospitality extended to me as I interviewed for this position," Wolter said "She and the rest of the search committee were great to work with and I look forward to interacting closely with them in the future. I can tell that they desire to provide the best experience possible for the student-athletes here at Vassar College.

"I want to thank coach Jonathan Penn for his efforts in building a nationally competitive program. He has provided a strong foundation and a talented team on which to build the future of the volleyball program at Vassar College. I look forward to continuing the evolution of the tradition, culture and competitive success of Brewer volleyball. I'm grateful for the opportunity that LJ Marx and Leanne Ulmer gave me at Carthage College. It was a valuable learning experience to be part of a top-10 program. Lastly, I would like to thank my family [Nichole and Isaiah] for their love and support. Without it, I would not be where I am today. I am excited to be part of the Vassar College family and community and I can't wait to get started."

From 2003 to 2007, Wolter was an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Parkside before being elevated to interim head coach for the 2008-09 season. In 2002, he served as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Division II South Dakota State and has extensive experience coaching volleyball at both the high school, club and junior levels. He was the Junior Olympic Head Volleyball Coach in Milwaukee (2008-09), from 2003-07 directed the Southwest Elite Volleyball Club and from 1997-2007 he held various high school coaching positions in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
