LOS ANGELES, Calif. – No. 15 Pacific picked up its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) victory of the season with a 3-1 decision against No. 7 USC on the road on Sunday. The Tigers controlled the entire match winning 25-18, 25-21, 26-28, 28-26.
The victory improved the Tigers to 2-2 and 1-2 in conference play, while the loss dropped USC to 2-2 and 2-1 in MPSF play.
Junior Adam Troy, senior Taylor Hughes and sophomore Tommy Carmody helped in the Tigers first victory against the Trojans since Jan. 2007. Troy picked up a team-best 15 kills, Hughes added 13 put-aways and 10 digs, while Carmody added nine blocks and seven kills.
The Orange and Black dominated the opening set, taking the game 25-18. Troy led the Tigers in the opening frame with three kills and a pair of blocks, while senior setter Patrick Tunnell picked up eight assists.
Tunnell played a flawless set in the second game, recording 14 assists for the Tigers en route to a 25-21 match victory. Hughes added six kills in the second frame to lead Pacific in the set victory.
The sweep for Pacific did not happen as USC took a back-and-forth battle in the third set 28-26, but the Tigers bounced back resiliently with a 28-26 set and match victory against the Trojans.
