No. 7 Stevenson defeats No. 8 NYU, falls to fifth-ranked UC Santa Cruz
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Led by junior Austin Jacoby and sophomore Kyle Wisner, Stevenson split a pair of games against nationally ranked teams on Friday at UC Santa Cruz's West Field House, falling to No. 5 UC Santa Cruz before beating No. 8 NYU.
The Mustangs (13-7) are now 6-6 versus nationally ranked teams this season, including 4-4 against teams ranked in the top 10 of the AVCA Top 15.
Jacoby totaled a team-high eight kills against UC Santa Cruz (8-5), but Stevenson was limited by 20 attack errors and a .024 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, the Banana Slugs had 25 total blocks, including 11 solo.
Jake Landel led UCSC with 11 kills and five total blocks, while Salvatore LaCavera had eight kills and three total blocks.
Jacoby added five digs while Wisner had four kills and three block assists. Junior Jon Martin also had four kills to go along with a team-high eight digs. Junior Adam Thatcher added seven digs and sophomore David Moler totaled 18 assists and five digs.
Jacoby totaled 20 of the Mustangs' 43 kills against the Pride (9-7) while posting a .515 hitting percentage. As a team, Stevenson hit .279, committing just 14 errors in 104 attempts.
Martin and freshman Patrick Schuyler each had seven kills while Martin added four total blocks. Wisner had five kills and three total blocks while Moler totaled 33 assists. Freshman Kyle Pottieger had six total blocks.
Colin LaPorte led NYU with 19 kills and eight digs while Keith Waddell had 17 kills and nine digs.
