ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Top-ranked Nazareth defeated Wells in three sets to open the Purple & Gold Invitational, hosted by the Golden Flyers. The scores of the match against Wells were 25-18, 25-22, 25-18.
Sophomore Brody Cord and freshman Bobby Beeman recorded 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the Golden Flyers’ balanced attack. There were 10 players that recorded at least one kill for Nazareth in the match.
With the victory, the Golden Flyers remained undefeated and improve to 24-0. The Express fell to 8-12 overall with the loss.
Nazareth finished with a 41-22 advantage in total kills. Following Cord and Beeman was freshman Tim Zyburt and senior Robert Kraft, who added six kills and four kills, respectively. Senior Connor Ecklund and sophomore Nick McDonagh combined for 26 assists to set up the Golden Flyers’ attack. Nazareth finished with hitting percentages of .240, .143 and .414 during the match.
Defensively, the Golden Flyers held the Express to hitting percentages of .200, .000, and .111 in the three sets. Beeman had a team-high six digs followed by freshman Cory Randolph, who had five digs. Freshman Chris Mahan was a presence at the net as he collected two solo blocks to thwart Wells’ scoring attempts.
The Golden Flyers also recorded a dominant 9-2 advantage in service aces. Cord finished with a match-high four aces for Nazareth.
John Farruggia had six kills, and Derek Nipps recorded nine assists to lead the Express.
