WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pacific-10 Conference released its 2010 volleyball preseason coaches poll on Thursday, Aug. 12. California received 48 points and was selected to finish fifth. Four-time defending champion Stanford received six first-place votes and was chosen to repeat with 77 points. The Cardinal narrowly edged out USC, which had 76 points with two first-place votes. Washington was chosen to finish third with 72 points and had two first-place votes as well.
Arizona earned 52 points for fourth place. Oregon had 39 points in sixth with UCLA in seventh with 37 points. Arizona State received 22 points in eighth; Washington State, 17 points in ninth; and Oregon State had 10 points to hold the 10th-place spot.
Last year, the Golden Bears were picked to finish second with one first-place vote. Washington had the other nine first-place votes and was selected to win the league championship. Cal completed the season with a 21-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in conference matches for fourth place.
The race for the conference crown has been dominated by two schools with just five of the ten institutions taking turns at hoisting the league title. Stanford holds 13 of the Pac-10's 26 volleyball championships with UCLA in second with seven banners. USC has three championships; followed by Washington with two and Arizona with its lone title coming in 2000.
The Bears' 2010 roster will feature two-time All-American setter Carli Lloyd; flanked by outside hitter Tarah Murrey. Cal has advanced at least as far as the NCAA regional championship match in each of the last three seasons and was an NCAA semifinalist in 2007. The Bears are just one of four teams that have been to a regional final in each of the last three seasons. The other three are Texas, Nebraska and three-time defending national champion Penn State.
Cal kicks its season off as hosts of the Cal Molten Classic on Friday, Aug. 27. The Bears will play UC Santa Barbara in a 7 p.m. PT match at Haas Pavilion. On Saturday, Aug. 28, the Gauchos will take on Manhattan College at noon before the Bears return to the court to face Manhattan in another 7 p.m. bout.
