EUGENE, Ore. – The fourth-ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team swept No. 18 Oregon, 3-0, Friday at McArthur Court in Eugene, Ore., to open the second half of Pac-10 play. Set scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 as the Cardinal improved to 17-2 overall and 8-2 in the Pac-10, while the Ducks drop to 16-6 on the year and 4-6 in the conference.
With the win, Stanford sweeps the season series with Oregon. Senior Alix Klineman led the team with 11 kills, six digs and four blocks. Sophomore Karissa Cook made her first appearance since the opening weekend of Pac-10 play and finished with seven assists and nine digs. Senior Cassidy Lichtman tallied five kills, 20 assists and five digs, while senior libero Gabi Ailes finished one dig shy of her season high with 23. As a team, Stanford out hit Oregon .242 to .078.
Stanford took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 win in the opening set. The Cardinal fell behind early, but used a 9-2 run to jump out to an 18-12 advantage. Freshman Carly Wopat tallied three blocks during that stretch. Stanford out hit Oregon .281 to .048 and out blocked the Ducks 5-0. Klineman led the team with five kills, while Lichtman tallied three. Ailes led the defense with nine of the team’s 14 digs in the first set.
The Cardinal captured the second set, 25-16. Errors plagued the Ducks as they posted eight attack errors, three reception errors, two service errors and a blocking error. Stanford pulled out to a 5-1 lead to begin the second, but Oregon fought back tying the score at 6-6. The Cardinal regained the lead with a 4-0 run, which included a kill and an ace by Klineman and a kill and a block from Lichtman. Stanford maintained a four-point advantage throughout the set until they pulled away by scoring the final five points of the set. Klineman, sophomore Hayley Spelman and freshman Rachel Williams each tallied three kills in the set. Ailes continued to show off her defensive skills with nine more digs in the second.
Stanford won the final set 25-22. Stanford took an 18-15 lead, but Oregon came back to take the lead 21-20 forcing head coach John Dunning to call timeout. The Cardinal outscored the Ducks 5-1 to complete the sweep. Klineman and Spelman each posted three kills in the set, while Lichtman registered eight assists and three digs.
Stanford wraps up the weekend with an afternoon Halloween contest at Oregon State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Gill Coliseum.
