WARRENSBURG, Mo. — The Washburn Lady Blues advanced to the South Central Regional final with a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded Abilene Christian on Friday night at the UCM Multipurpose Building. The Lady Blues will play the winner of Central Missouri and Emporia State on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
Washburn (32-2) took down the Wildcats (27-6) 25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 25-15. The first set saw the Lady Blues jump out to an early 9-4 lead only to have ACU rally and tie the score at 13. Washburn regained the lead at 14-13 and never trailed again. A 9-2 run gave WU a seven-point advantage.
The Lady Blues jumped on ACU early in set two and never looked back. An 8-4 run gave Washburn a five-point lead and they extended it to as many as 10 with the 25-15 win.
The Wildcats jumped out to a big lead early in set three leading 11-4. Washburn rallied with a 10-3 run to tie the set at 14-all. The set was tied again at 16 apiece, but a 5-0 run by ACU gave the Wildcats the advantage and they closed out the set 25-20.
The fourth set had six ties and four lead changes before Washburn grabbed control with a 12-5 run. The Lady Blues finished the set and the match on a 6-3 run to close it out at 25-15.
Mollie Lacy and Jessica Kopp each had a match-high 13 kills to lead WU. Jessica Fey had eight kills and Aubri Renshaw added seven to go along with 10 digs. Molly Smith had 20 digs. Amanda Guess had 22 assists and 10 digs, while Abby Wittman had 18 assists and 17 digs.
Jordan Schilling led ACU with 13 kills. Ijeoma Moronu had 32 assists for the Wildcats and Kalynne Allen had 20 digs.
The Lady Blues advance to their second regional final with the last coming in 2007. Washburn defeated Truman 3-1 that year to advance to the Elite Eight.
