Navy hires Bock as head coach
Bock’s teams have won 1,352 matches and two national titles
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Larry Bock, the winningest coach in collegiate volleyball history, has been named head coach of the Navy women’s volleyball program. The announcement was made Tuesday by Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk.
“I am extremely pleased that Larry Bock will join the Naval Academy family,” Gladchuk said. “His accomplishments in the profession are phenomenal. Those who have played for him speak with the absolute highest praise and with sincere appreciation for how he has influenced their lives in such a positive way. We are all looking forward to the leadership he will bring to our program and especially the impact he will have on our midshipmen as a distinguished role model, coach and educator.”
Bock has amassed an overall record of 1,352-283-4 (82.6 winning percentage) in 34 seasons as the head coach of the women’s volleyball team at Juniata College and six years as the school’s men’s volleyball coach. He has won nearly 200 more matches than the coach with the next highest number of overall victories. His 1,252 wins as a women’s head coach leads all coaches by nearly 150 victories and his winning percentage of 86.7 percent on the women’s side ranks second in the history of the sport among coaches with at least 10 years of experience.
“I’m delighted and excited about the opportunity to coach at the Naval Academy,” Bock said. “There are few places where I would ever consider moving and Navy is at the top of that short list. Mike Schwob has been one of the best coaches and people in the volleyball world so I’m honored to be following in those big footprints. I’m mostly looking forward to getting to know the volleyball team and working with this young, talented group to achieve some really neat and reachable goals.”
His Juniata women’s teams compiled a record of 1,252-192. The program won at least 30 matches in each of the last 31 seasons and surpassed 40 wins 10 times during that time period. The Eagles compiled a staggering 358-14 record (96.2 winning percentage) against conference opponents, with wins in 323 consecutive matches against conference foes since their last loss in 1981. And while Juniata competes on the NCAA’s Division III level, the Eagles also posted a 67-23 record (74.4 percent) against NCAA Division I teams.
Bock guided the Eagles to 30 consecutive NCAA Division III NCAA Tournaments. Juniata advanced to the semifinal round of the event 25 times (including 14 of the last 15 years), appeared in eight championship matches and won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2006.
Individually, Bock’s players garnered 65 All-America certificates, four national player-of-the-year awards and one national rookie-of-the-year laurel. Additionally, five Juniata players received CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades, two were selected as the organization’s academic All-American of the year and two received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Bock has received nearly every possible coaching award. He has been tabbed as the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Division III National Coach of the Year five times and as the organization’s region coach of the year on nine occasions. Bock also was a member of the AVCA’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class (2003), was elected as one of the two NCAA Silver Anniversary Team Head Coaches in 2006, received the AVCA Founders Award for service to the sport in 2000, garnered the USA Volleyball Trailblazer Award in 2006 and was selected as the 2009 recipient of the All-Time Great Coaches Award by USA Volleyball. He has also served as Juniata’s athletic director and was named the Division III Athletic Director of the Year in 2005.
