GAFFNEY, S.C. – After serving as the interim head coach of the Limestone men’s and women’s volleyball programs since last December, Rick Banis has had the interim label removed from his title and has officially been hired as the head coach of both programs as announced by the Limestone College Athletic Department.
Banis took over as the interim head of both programs on Dec.14, 2010 and inherited a second-year men’s program that went 12-10 in their first year. This year, he guided the team to a 15-8 record, including victories in their last five matches. Both were program records. He has also taken over the off-season practices for the women’s team during that time as they prepare for the 2011 campaign in September.
“Coach Banis has done a wonderful job with the men’s volleyball program this spring” said Mike Cerino, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “His combination of on-court experience and coaching background made him an easy choice. We are looking forward to him continuing to guide the men’s team and also bring our women’s volleyball team back to the top of the conference”.
Previously Banis has been a head coach at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan. where he served as the head women’s coach in 2008 and 2009. He led that program to a 32-36 overall record, and a 13-18 mark after taking over the reins just two days prior to the preseason.
A former EVP professional tour player, Banis began his coaching career as an assistant with the Newman University (Wichita, Kan.) women’s volleyball team from 2002-03 and stepped in as the interim head coach in 2004. That season he led the Jets to a 31-11 overall record and a regional tournament berth. He has also had assistant coaching positions with the College of Saint Mary (Omaha, Neb.), Lewis University (Romeoville, Ill.) and powerful Bishop Kelly High School.
Banis is currently pursuing a Master of Organizational Leadership from Lewis University and holds a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Sociology from Newman University. Prior to his time at those institutions, Banis served in the United States Air Force from 1993-98 with stations in California, Kuwait, Korea and Japan.
“I am honored to be welcomed in to the Limestone College family” said Banis “I have great expectations for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams next year. I look forward to the incoming recruits to make an immediate impact and I am so excited for the future of both programs”.
