LOS ANGELES — Sophomore outside hitter Falyn Fonoimoana has been declared ineligible for the 2011 season, USC head coach Mick Haley announced.

Fonoimoana earned Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year honors last year. She started 31 of 34 matches and was second on the team in kills (398) and points (468.0). Fonoimoana earned Dayton Regional most valuable player honors after recording 33 kills and 20 digs.

She was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

“We exhausted all of our resources in order to help Falyn retain her eligibility, ” Haley said. “We have very high expectations of our student-athletes, on and off the court, here at USC.”

No. 2 USC begins the 2011 season in the AVCA Showcase on Friday and Saturday in University Park, Pa., against No. 1 Penn State and No. 12 Minnesota.
