Northern Michigan 3, Northwood (Mich.) 1



The No. 21 Northwood University volleyball team saw its 2004 season come to an end Sunday evening with a 3-1 loss to No. 17 Northern Michigan.

With the loss, Northwoods season comes to an end with a 21-10 overall record. NMU is now 24-6 overall and will travel to the Elite 8 December 2-4.

A late run by the Wildcats in game one earned NMU a 1-0 lead. After falling behind 4-0 to start the match, Northwood fought back to tie things at four. The match eventually was tied 11-11 before Northern Michigan took a 20-16 lead a lead they would not surrender en route to a 30-25 win.

It was the third meeting between the two teams this season, with Northwood earning a 3-2 victory in Midland on Sept. 18 before NMU swept the Timberwolves in Marquette Oct. 24.

Northern Michigan used the momentum they gained from the victory in game one to get off to a quick start in the second game. The Wildcats took a 16-9 early on, a hole the Timberwolves could not overcome. Northwood did pull within three later in the game, but a late Wildcat run gave Northern Michigan a 2-0 lead after a 30-21 win.

The third game started as a back and forth affair. The two teams were tied at 16-16 before NMU made a run to make the score 19-16. Northwood pulled within one numerous times down the stretch before finally tying the match at 25-25. NU continued their run, eventually taking a 27-25 lead before going on to a 30-28 win to stay alive in the match.

Game four was close throughout. With the two teams tied at 26, Northern Michigan scored three straight points a hole that Northwood would not recover from.

Four Timberwolves finished with 10 or more kills, led by Gorana Maricic. She finished with 18 kills and 13 digs. Dragana Todorovic added 17 kills and a .405 hitting percentage, while Sladjana Vasiljevic and Tracy Martin added 12 and 10 kills respectively.
