NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kelly Bowman had 22 assists, eight kills and seven digs as fourth-seeded Minnesota cruised to a 3-0 victory over Long Island in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The game scores were 30-19, 30-12 and 30-27. Erin Martin added 12 kills, and Lindsey Taatjes had 19 assists for the Golden Gophers, who are ranked fifth in the nation.
With the win, Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert became only the fifth active coach to reach 800 NCAA Division I career wins.
The Golden Gophers (29-4), who will play the winner of the Yale-Albany match in the second round on Friday at 7 p.m., won their eighth straight match.
Minnesota jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the first game, and the Blackbirds never got closer than seven. In the second game, the Golden Gophers used an early 7-1 run to take a 10-4 lead en route to the 30-12 win. Minnesota led the third game 20-14 before Long Island went on an 11-7 run to pull within 27-25. Minnesota, though, hung on to clinch the match and improve to 10-0 all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Lizelle Jackson had nine kills and 12 digs to lead Long Island, the Northeast Conference champions. Dana Demayo added 10 digs and six kills for the Blackbirds (32-7).
