COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (29-3 overall) women's volleyball team defeated Ohio (29-3) 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-20) in second round action of the NCAA Championships held in St. John Arena on the Ohio State campus. The seventh-ranked Buckeyes stopped 25th-ranked Ohio's 23-match winning streak. The fifth-seeded Buckeyes advance to the Minneapolis Regional where they will face 12th-seed Tennessee (32-2) Friday, Dec. 10 in the Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus. The second regional semifinal has Georgia Tech (27-2) playing host and fourth-seed Minnesota (30-4). The Friday winners play Saturday, Dec. 10 for a berth in the NCAA National Semifinals, Dec. 16 at Long Beach, Calif.
In the match, OSU's Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a team-high 23 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 21 kills, one ace serve and one solo block. Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) added 14.5 points with 12 kills, two solo blocks and one assist block while Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) has 12.5 points with 10 kills and five assist blocks. Ohio's Julia Winkfield had a team-high 11.5 points for the Bobcats with a team-high nine kills, a solo block and three assist blocks.
Ohio State took a 5-4 lead in game one with an ace serve by Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.). An OSU service error tied the game at five. A Bobcat block by Briana Adamovsky and Winkfield and a Winkfield kill gave Ohio a 7-5 lead. Two Gordon kills tied the game at seven. After several ties took the game to 14-all, kills by Winkfield and Holly Schetzsle gave the Bobcats a 16-14 lead. At 17-15 OU, a Schetzsle block made it 18-15. Buckeye kills by Stevens and Meyer and an OU error tied the game at 18. The Bobcats took a 21-18 lead with kills by Adamovsky and Melissa Griffin and an Adamovsky ace serve. A Bobcat service error and two Stevens kills tied the game at 21. Kills by Schetzsle and Stephanie Blackburn gave the Bobcats a 23-21 lead. Kills by Stevens and Griffin moved the score to 24-22. Ohio State, with kills from Stevens and Gordon, tied the game at 24 at OU called time out. The scored moved to 25-all with errors by both team. OSU took a 26-25 lead with a Gordon solo block as OU called time out. With Kastein serving, kills by Gordon and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and a McCarthy solo block made it 29-25, game point. A Bobcat error ended the game at 30-25. Ohio State it .368 for the game to .156 for Ohio.
Tied at four in game two, kills by Meyer and Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) and a solo block by Stevens put Ohio State ahead, 7-4. Two OSU errors and a Bobcat block by Winkfield and Adamovsky tied the game at seven. Tied at eight, a Bobcat service error and a Gordon kill put Ohio State ahead, 10-8. At 11-10, two Bobcat errors gave OSU a 13-10 lead. A Stephanie Blackburn kill and an OU error moved the score to 14-11. A Buckeye error and two Winkfield kills tied the game at 14. Buckeye kills by Gordon and Mapp and a Mapp-Stevens block gave OSU a 17-14 lead as OU called time out. A Buckeye error cut the lead to 17-15. Kills by Gordon and Winkfield moved the score to 18-16. OSU kills from Stevens, Marisa Main (So. Louisville, Ky.) and Gordon opened a 21-16 Ohio State lead. Schetzsle stopped the run with a kill for OU (21-17). A Gordon kill started a four-point run, adding a Kastein ace serve and two blocks by McCarthy and Meyer to take a 25-17 lead as Ohio called time out. The Bobcats, with kills from Jenna Gaughran and Blackburn, cut the lead to 25-19. Meyer and Blackburn exchanged kills to move the score to 26-20. OSU kills by Meyer and Main and a Bobcat error set game point at 29-20. Meyer's kill closed the game at 30-20. For the game, Ohio State hit .372 to .186 for the Bobcats.
Ohio took a 4-3 lead with a kill by Ashley Elliott in game three. A Bobcat error tied the game at four. That began a seven-point run for Ohio State that gave them a 10-4 lead. During the run, Gordon and McCarthy each had two kills and two Ohio errors completed the run. The Buckeye continued to expand the lead and with a Gordon kill and a Mapp-McCarthy block held a 10-point lead at 20-10. Ohio outscored the Buckeyes six-to-four to cut the lead to eight at 24-16. Two Ohio errors and a Meyer kill made it 27-16, an 11-point OSU lead. Winkfield's kill made it 27-17. OSU kills by Stevens and Main made it 29-17. Ohio, with a Winkfield kill, an OSU error and a block by Elliott and Adamovsky cut the Ohio State lead to 29-20. A Bobcat service error ended the game at 30-20, to close the match, 3-0, for Ohio State. In the game, the Buckeyes hit .364 to .068 for the Bobcats.
For the match, Ohio State hit .368 to Ohio's .136. The Buckeyes enjoyed a 58-40 advantage in kills and had a 3-2 margin in ace serves. Ohio State gave up seven service errors to five for the Bobcats. Defensively, Ohio State had a 57-44 margin in digs with OSU's Main recording a match-high 14. At the net, Ohio State had a 12-6 advantage in team blocks. OSU's Stevens produced a match-high five assist blocks for the Buckeyes. At setter, OSU's main had 41 assists, adding six kill and three assist blocks. OU's Adamovsky had 31 assists, adding four kills, four assist blocks and two ace serves.
