TOUGH TERPS: The University of Maryland cracked the CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association national rankings at No. 25 after beating Virginia and Virginia Tech on the road.

The Terrapins are one of just six undefeated teams in the nation and boast a 14-0 record. Maryland has won 20 of its last 21 matches, and is the two-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion.

The Terps lead the league in kills (16.31 per game), blocks (3.45 per game), hitting percentage (.294) and opponent hitting percentage (.144).

SWEEPING UP: Ohio University extended its streak of sweeps to six matches with a 3-0 win at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 1, helping the Bobcats earn a No. 24 ranking in the latest CSTV/AVCA Top 25.

The ranking is the highest-ever for the Ohio program, one better than its No. 25 spot in the final week of the regular season last year. The Mid-American Conference team to earn a national ranking before the Bobcats last season was Western Michigan in 1988.

The Bobcats are also riding a 32-match winning streak on their home court after defeating Kent State, 3-0, on Sept. 29.

LIONS LEADER: Senior setter Sam Tortorello garnered Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week for the first time in her career after guiding No. 4 Penn State to a pair of sweeps over then-No. 18 Ohio State and Indiana.

Tortorello averaged 14.8 assists, 1.42 points, 0.83 blocks, 2.17 digs and 0.50 kills in the two victories. The native of Shorewood, Ill., also earned Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts.

The Nittany Lions posted a combined .338 hitting percentage in the two matches under Tortorellos leadership. With 89 assists last week, she has 5,294 in her career, just 161 shy of third on the schools all-time list.

TOPPING THE HILL: Western Kentucky is off to its best start in school history after victories at Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State. The Hilltoppers are 18-1 and have won 14 straight matches.

WKU have swept 12 consecutive opponents with wins in 39 straight games " a streak that ranks as the 13th longest in NCAA history. The team was one nine squads receiving votes in the latest CSTV/AVCA Top 25.

The Hilltoppers are led by senior outside hitter Crystal Towler who averaged 3.44 kills and a .442 hitting percentage in three WKU wins last week. Towler was selected Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for her stellar play.

NOTABLE: The Big Ten is the only league of the six major conferences (ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, SEC) to have every team hold a .500 or better winning percentage. The 11 schools have compiled a 93-23 record against non-conference opponents this season ¦ No. 3 Washington hosts second-ranked Stanford in a rematch of last years national semifinal on Oct 7. The Cardinal beat the Huskies, 3-1, in their last meeting and eventually defeated Minnesota to win the NCAA Championship. Stanford has won 14 straight and 29 of its last 30 matches ¦. Sophomore opposite hitter Amber McCray recorded a career-high 17.0 points and 15 kills while hitting .636 as No. 5 Florida defeated Kentucky, 3-0, on Oct. 2. The Gators won their 15th straight Southeastern Conference home opener with head coach Mary Wise at the helm.
