Nov. 18, 2005

Wisconsin-Whitewater (39-4) advanced to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship, defeating the University of La Verne (24-9) three games to none in the evenings first semifinal.

Whitewater edged La Verne in a close first game that went back and forth; the Leopards led as late as 26-25 before the Warhawks scored five of the games final six points to earn the victory. Neither team led by more than four points, that being a 19-15 Whitewater lead after a block by Carley Polk. Abbie Mueller led the Warhawks with 16 assists, while Leslie Flores led La Verne with 14 in the opening frame.

The Warhawks had a much easier time in the second game, building an early 15-5 lead and cruising to a 30-17 victory. Polk added seven blocks for Whitewater.

The third game was another close one, however, as the Leopards held an 18-16 victory after a Whitney Kranz kill. The Warhawks outscored La Verne 14-7 the rest of the way, however, to finish the sweep.

First-year Whitewater coach Stacy Boudreau was impressed by the play of Cassie Uttech, who led the Warhawks with 13 kills and chipped in nine digs. Cassie is peaking at the right time, and playing how we know shes capable, said Boudreau.

Brianna Gonzalez had a team-leading 10 kills for La Verne , while Leslie Flores had 33 assists.

For the afternoon, Whitewater had 51 kills to La Verne s 39.

The Warhawks, who are making their fourth NCAA Finals appearance and who won the national championship in 2002, will play the winner of this evenings Wittenberg-Juniata match. Boudreau added that she didnt have a preference which opponent her team plays, but that we couldnt be happier with the last two matches. Weve been doing a good job getting things done on our side.
