LOS ANGELES --- Senior outside hitter Katy Daly had a team-high 23 kills Friday as the Pepperdine Waves upset the No. 22 BYU Cougars, 3-1 (30-24, 30-28, 24-30, 30-28), in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Womens Volleyball Tournament from USCs Lyon Center. Daly also had a team-high 16 digs in the match.

The Waves improve to 18-11 on the season after jumping out to a 2-0 lead on the Cougars. Pepperdine had to hold off BYU in the fourth game to earn the victory.

BYU ends the season with a 25-4 record.

Freshman Julie Rubenstein added 21 kills for the Waves. Sophomore Erica Lott led the Cougars with 24 kills while sophomore Chelsea Goodman recorded 16 kills and 16 digs.

The Waves outhit the Cougars by a .228 to .218 margin while BYU held a 14.0 to 6.0 advantage in blocks for the match.

Pepperdine will face the winner of tonights USC-UC Santa Barbara match tomorrow in the second round match, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Fans are asked to arrive on campus as close to the start time as possible since there will be no available parking until the conclusion of the USC-UCLA football game at 1:30 p.m.
