The NCAA Central Region Volleyball Tournament will return to the Gangelhoff Center in 2008 as the Golden Bears (31-1) start their run at defending a national title. The tournament will run this Thursday through Saturday, with the winner advancing to the 2008 NCAA Elite Eight. The Golden Bears earned the right to host after sealing the #1 spot in the region.
The Golden Bear volleyball team has strung together 31 consecutive wins to emerge once again as the strongest team in the region. Concordia has hosted numerous other regional volleyball tournaments, but overtook Minnesota Duluth on UMD turf last season to win the regional title before they went on to claim the NCAA DII crown. The Bulldogs are in the mix again this season, taking the third seed in the bracket with a 24-8 record.
The Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State come in behind the Golden Bears at #2 in the region after going 27-5 overall this season. They are one of five NSIC programs to make the cut for the NCAA Tournament and land among the top eight in the Central Region. Augustana College (23-10) is the #5 seed and Wayne State College (23-9) is #6.
The three Rocky Mountain Conference institutions that will participate in this season's regional tournament are #4 Nebraska-Kearney (31-3), #7 Metro State (18-8) and #8 Regis University (19-11). The Regis Rangers won the RMAC conference tournament this afternoon to receive the automatic bid into the tournament.
Game times for the tournament at the Gangelhoff Center have been set and can be viewed at the OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT WEBSITE.
