CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (33-5) downed Mercyhurst College (20-13) 3-1 today in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament at California (Pa.).

Lock Haven won 3-1 (22-25, 25-9, 25-15 & 25-21), marking the second straight year where LHU opened the NCAA tournament with a win over Mercyhurst.

After dropping the first game of the match 22-25, the Lady Eagles responded in a big way to win the next three games and close out the match.

A huge key for Lock Haven was its .545 team kill-percentage in game two.

Leading the way was Xuan Gao (Dong Ying, China/Zibo No. 10. Middle School), who had a match-high 11 kills. Xuan, who was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Freshman and Athlete of the Year earlier today, hit .417 over the four-game match. She also added nine digs.

Fabiana Gomez (Montevideo, Uruguay/Consejo de E.S.) was tremendous for LHU. The PSAC First Team selection recorded a match-high 33 assists and added 15 digs. She also had a match-high three aces.

Christie Naumann (Charters Towers, Australia/Gladstone) and Haley Gribler (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) both had 10 kills apiece.

Haley Gribler (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) had 21 digs to lead LHU.

With the win Lock Haven advances to tomorrow’s (Friday, November 20) Atlantic Region Semifinal match. LHU will take on Edinboro University, who downed Clarion 3-2 earlier today.
