INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team won its opening match of the 2009 Midwest Regional Tournament against Grand Valley State University, 3-1.  The Lakers took the first set by a 25-21 score before SVSU would answer, taking the next three by scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-18, respectively.

Senior Jaclyn Carnago (St. Clair, Mich) recorded 14 kills on the afternoon for the Cardinals while hitting .385 and adding three aces.  Senior Kait Harris (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) had 39 assists versus GVSU as well as 16 digs and two blocks.  Sophomores Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) and Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont.) had 22 digs and 15 digs, respectively for Saginaw, as the Cardinals held the Lakers to a .013 hitting percentage.  Junior Jessica Treiber (Sebewaing, Mich./USA HS) had eight kills in the match while senior Allison Schlinkert (Marysville, Mich.), sophomore Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) and Buxton each had seven.

With the win, Saginaw advances its record to 22-9 on the season while Grand Valley's season ends with a 16-13 record,  SVSU now advances to the Regional semifinals, where it will face the winner of the Ferris State University and Lewis University match.  The second round match is set for tomorrow at 5:00 pm.
