Springfield, Ohio - The Heidelberg University volleyball team opened up action in the Great Lakes Regional of the 2010 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships with a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18) win over Greenville College. Wittenberg University is the host institution of the eight-team regional in Springfield, Ohio.
Heidelberg is the top-seed of the regional and extends its record setting season record to 33-5. Greenville closes out one of its most successful seasons at 26-6. The first round win moves the Berg to the second round on Friday, Nov. 12 against Calvin College. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m. Tomorrow's match will pit two nationally ranked teams, as the Berg is ranked 13th and Calvin sits 10th.
The Berg is in the midst of its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals and it is the third time that Heidelberg will move to the second round.
In the opening set, the Berg utilized a 9-0 run early to extend a three point advantage to 13, 16-3, en route to the win. As a team, Heidelberg finished with 15 kills in 27 attempts with just two errors for a .481 attack percentage. Leading the charge was Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) with six kills, while Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) added three. Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) took charge with her jump serve and finished with three aces.
Greenville settled in during set two, while the Berg offense cooled off. Heidelberg hit just .114 with 11 kills in 44 attempts with six errors. Both sides battled back and forth and Greenville built a four-point lead, 16-12. Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) led the Berg with three kills in a 6-2 run to put the Berg on top, 21-19, to force a Panthers timeout. Greenville responded through three ties to even the match at a set apiece. For the set, Haase led the way with five kills.
Heidelberg regained its composure in set three and jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind two service aces from Haase. Its lead was extended to double digits on two occasions en route to the win. Teaming up for six kills was Bevington and Reinhart to lead Heidelberg.
Registering the first point of set four was Greenville, but Street responded with a kill to even up the score. A Greenville attack error gave the Berg the lead for good. Heidelberg led by as many as eight points, 20-12, following a Bevington and Street block. Reinhart led the hitters with four kills.
In the end, three Heidelberg hitters finished with double digit kills. Leading the way was Bevington with 14 kills followed by Haase with 11 and Reinhart with 10. The duo of Haase and Reinhart made it a double-double in the win with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. Hasse and Reinhart each served up three aces.
Setting up the offense was Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) and Alexa Frank (Tiffin, Ohio / Calvert). They each dished out 21 assists.
All-American Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) led the way with a match-high 18 digs.
