Adelphi Outlasts C.W. Post in Five-Set Thriller

OAKDALE, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball traveled to Oakdale, New York on Thursday, November 18 to take on fifth seeded, cross-town rival, C.W. Post in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II East Regional at Dowling College. The Panthers dominated play in the first two games, but the Pioneers knotted the action at two, before a 10-2 Panther run in the fifth set sealed the victory, 3-2. With the win Adelphi posts the programs fourth straight 20-win season, improving to 20-11.
The first set was tight in the early going, as a Pioneer kill made the score 12-11. however a Heather Mau answer, sparked a 6-3 run that gave Adelphi a 19-14 lead that would turn into a 25-18 set one victory. The second set was similar to the first, as a Panther service error made the score, 15-13. But, the Pioneers returned the favor, as a C.W. Post service error sent Adelphi on a 4-1 spurt that gave the Panthers control, 19-14 on the way to a 25-18 game two victory.
The tide turned in the third set, as the Pioneers stormed out to a 5-1 lead, forcing a Panther time out. Adelphi regrouped and pulled to within one point, 6-5, on a Samantha Rico finish, but a, 4-0 run by C.W. Post put the Pioneers ahead, 10-5. Despite their best efforts Adelphi would get no closer then four the rest of the way, falling 25-17.
The Panthers started strong in the fourth set, rushing out to a 7-3 lead on a Chelsea Overholt kill. However, C.W. Post was not finished, as the Pioneers ripped off 13 of the next 17 points to take a 16-11 advantage. Adelphi would rally to get within three, 18-15, courtesy of another Overholt kill, but dropped the set, 25-17 as the Pioneers knotted the action at two games apiece.
It looked like the fifth set would be a repeat of the third as C.W. Post pushed out to a 4-0 lead and held a 5-2 edge after a Marilena Guadagnini kill. However, the Panthers responded with a decisive run, scoring eight of the next nine points, four on Panther kills, to take a 10-6 lead. From there Adelphi had control of the set, ending things on an Emily Dorko kill, 15-10 to collect a, 3-2 victory.
Hilary Pavels led the Panthers offense with 13 kills, while Overholt added 12 and Dorko chipped in 10. Pavels also had a game-high 25 digs, while Bree Popham (21), Overholt (11) and Alexandra Kahen (11) also reached double figures. In addition to seven kills, Heather Mau added 44 assists for the Panthers.
The win marks the first time in program history that the Panthers will advance to the East Regional Semifinals in four trips to the NCAA Tournament and improves Adelphi's NCAA record to 1-3.
The Panthers will take on the top seeded and host, Dowling College Golden Lions on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 pm in Oakdale, New York for the right to play for the Regional title on Saturday.
