Buckeyes Advance with 3-1 Victory over Lipscomb

The Ohio State women's volleyball team (23-11 overall) advanced to the second round the NCAA Championship with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-8, 22-25, 25-23) victory over Lipscomb (24-7) Friday night in the Frericks Center on the University of Dayton Campus. Buckeye Katie Dull posted a team-high 16 points with 12 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and four assist blocks. OSU's Emily Danks added 15.5 points with 13 kills, one ace serve and three assist blocks. Meghan Hinemeyer of Lipscomb collected a match-high 17.7 points with 14 kills, two ace serves, one solo block and one assist block. Teammate Alex Kelly added 15.5 points with 14 kills and three assist blocks.
In set one with the score tied at one, a Lipscomb error, an Emily Danks kills and a Danks-Allie Schwarzwalder block gave Ohio State a 4-1 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead at 18-15 before kills from Kelly and Hinemeyer made it a one point set at 18-17. A Dull kill made it 19-17. A kill from Hinemeyer and an OSU error tied the set at 19. A kill from Betsy Hone and a Danks-Schwarzwalder block gave Ohio State a 21-19 lead off a Bison time out. A Lipscomb error, a Dull solo block and a Hone ace serve gave the Buckeyes a 24-19 lead and serving set point. Kills from Hinemeyer and Kaycee Green cut the margin to 24-21 stopped two set points as OSU called time out. The Bisons stopped a third set point with an ace serve from Hinemeyer at 24-22. Ohio State closed out the set with a Hone solo block to win, 25-22, and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .391 for the set to .333 for Lipscomb.
Tied at one in set two, two Bison errors and a kill from Schwarzwalder gave Ohio State a 4-1 lead. A Buckeye error and an Anna Szerszen kill made it 5-2. A Hinemeyer kill and a Lipscomb error made it 6-3. At 7-4, a seven-point run opened a 14-4 Buckeye lead. The run included two kills from Dull, one from Kelli Barhorst, a Szerszen-Barhorst block, a Barhorst-Dull block, a Barhorst-Hone block and a Bison error. A Hinemeyer kill stopped the run at 14-5. OSU responded with a six-point run including kills from Danks and Hone, two Schwarzwalder-Dull blocks, a Schwarzwalder solo block and a Barhorst ace serve to open a 20-5 lead. With OSU leading, 22-6, a Jake Pease kill and a Caitlin Dotson ace serve cut the lead to 22-8. Buckeye kills from Danks and Schwarzwalder made it set point at 24-8. Dull, with an ace serve, closed out the set at 25-8 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .579 for the set to -.192 for Lipscomb.
The Bisons broke a 1-1 tie in set three with a Katie Rose ace serve and a Kelly kill for a 3-1 lead. OSU cut the lead to one at 3-2 with a kill from Danks. At 4-3 Lipscomb, two kills from Kelly and a Kelly-Pease block gave the Bisons a 7-3 lead that they would not lose. Lipscomb expanded the lead to six several times, the last at 14-8. OSU cut into the lead to trail, 21-19, off a Bison error. Two kills from Green took the lead to 23-19. A Lipscomb error made it 23-20. The Bison reached set point with a Kelly kill at 24-20. Two Lipscomb errors stopped set points to make it 24-22. A Green kill gave Lipscomb a 25-22 set win and cut the Ohio State lead in the match to 2-1. The Bison hit .357 for the set to .216 for Ohio State.
Tied at two in set four, two kills from Danks and a Bison error gave Ohio State a 5-2 lead. Kelly, with two kills, cut the lead to 5-4. Kills from Schwarzwalder and Hinemeyer made it 6-5, OSU. Lipscomb tied the match at six with a Pease kill. Three Buckeye errors and a kill from Hinemeyer made it 10-6 Bisons. A kill from Danks and an OSU error made it 11-7. Lipscomb held a 13-7 lead off two Hinemeyer kills as OSU called time out. At 15-9, kills from Hone and Dull cut into the lead at 15-11. At 16-12 a Kelly-Green block made it 17-12. A Szerszen kill and a Danks-Barhorst block cut the lead to three at 17-14. A kill from Kelly made it 18-14. Two Lipscomb errors made it 18-16 as the Bisons called time out. Trailing, 20-18, OSU tied the set at 20 with a Dull-Schwarzwalder block and a Lipscomb error. A second Bison error made it 21-20 Ohio State. Lipscomb tied the set at 21 with a kill from Rose. A Charlyn Ursell-Kelly block gave the Bisons a 22-21 lead forcing an OSU time out. A Lipscomb error tied the set at 22. OSU took a 23-22 lead with a kill from Dull. A solo block from Ursell tied the set at 23. Ohio State reached match point off a Lipscomb service error at 24-23. The Buckeyes closed out the match with a Schwarzwalder kill to win the set, 25-23 and the match, 3-1. The Buckeyes hit .116 for the set to .073 for Lipscomb.
Ohio State hit .270 for the match, holding Lipscomb to .162. The Buckeyes edged the Bisons in kills, 48-47 and had a 47-44 margin in assists. OSU's Hone posted a match-high 40 assists with Pease recording 37 for Lipscomb. Ohio State had an 8-5 advantage in ace serves with OSU's Hone producing a match-high three. OSU gave up eight service errors to 10 for the Bisons. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 55-52 edge in digs with OSU's Susan Halverson posting a match-high 20. At the net, Ohio State had a 13 to six margin in team blocks. Schwarzwalder, with a solo and five assist blocks, collected a match-high six total blocks against Lipscomb.
Ohio State advances to the second round to play host and 13th-ranked/#14 seed Dayton (28-3) at 5:30 p.m. ET Saturday in the Frericks Center. Dayton advanced to the second round with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-11) victory over Butler (21-10)
