Tempkin steps down as head coach
WPI had back-to-back 20 win seasons for first time in 22 years
Worcester, Mass. --- WPI announced the resignation of head coach Alex Temkin. Temkin departs following a successful two-year stint with the Engineers after accepting a full-time senior information technology position with Saga Communications based in Gross Point Farms, Mich.
Temkin wasted little time in making his mark on the WPI program.
In 2009, the Engineers opened the season by winning both the Regis Tournament and the Worcester City Championships en route to a 22-8 mark and its first NEWMAC berth since 2005. Last season the Engineers repeated as Regis Tournament champions and posted a 22-9 overall record. Temkin’s squad finished fifth in the NEWMAC and defeated conference foe Smith for the first time since 1987.
The back-to-back 20 plus win seasons was just the second occurrence in program history and the first in 22 years.
“While we are sad to see Alex leave WPI, we excited for him to be able to pursue this new opportunity," said Dana L. Harmon, WPI's Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics. “The program had made incredible strides under his leadership the last two years and is in great shape for the future.”
