ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Washington-St. Louis opened the 2011 season by picking up a pair of 3-0 wins against Harris-Stowe and Culver-Stockton on Thursday night at the Washington University Field House.

The Bears hit .562 in the 25-5 opening-set win against Culver-Stockton, with senior outside hitter Kristen Thomas pacing the offense with five kills. Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Byrne scored on all three of her swings in the second set, and sophomore right side Emily Tulloch led the team with four kills in the third-set victory.

The Bears nearly set a school record by serving up 25 aces against Harris-Stowe, with senior middle hitter Lauren Budde and junior setter Marilee Fisher posting career highs in the process. The 25 aces fell one shy of the team’s all-time record of 26, set against Simpson College during the 1993 season.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport opened the 2011 season with a 3-0 win against Hollins. Five Captains had six or more kills in the match with senior Chelsea McClure leading the way with eight.

After the victory head coach Lindsay Birch said “It was a good opener for us. We were really crisp with our ball control and defense, allowing our offense to attack in-system quite often.” Junior defensive specialist Abby Hogge led the team in digs with 15 and also added a service ace. Also contributing defensively was senior Jessie Heavenrich with a solo block, junior Bailey Jensen with two block assists and junior Christie Fellows and junior Cory Harris with one apiece. The Captains held Hollins to a negative hitting percentage.
