Angelo State survives St. Edward’s
Hilltoppers’ comeback fall short as Rambelles advance
WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- No. 18 Angelo State defeated St. Edward's 3-2 (25-23, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13) in Thursday’s NCAA first-round match at Central Missouri.
The Rambelles were led offensively by Celeste Bonter with 20 kills and Kaelen Valdez with 18. Alex Woolsey contributed 56 assists in the marathon match for Angelo State. On the defensive side of the ball, Woolsey led the Rambelles with 33 digs while Shelby Wilt had 27 and Kayla Smith had 21, respectively. As a team, Angelo State hit .198 for the match with 75 kills, 69 assists and 123 digs.
St. Edward's was led by Courtney Trevino on the offensive side of the ball with 18 kills while Ashley Vander Hey had 17 and Whitney Rhoden had 15, respectively. Defensively, the Hilltoppers were paced by Michelle Hundt with 41 digs and Vander Hey with 25. Overall, St. Edwards hit .181 for the match with 64 kills, 62 assists and 116 digs.
The Rambelles improve to 31-5 with the victory and advance to Friday evening’s semifinal round of the NCAA Division-II South Central Regional and will face either No. 6 Central Missouri or Abilene Christian.
