Bridgeport defeats New Haven

Purple Knights advance to quarterfinals for first time

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — For the first time in school history, Bridgeport advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals after a four-set win against top-seeded New Haven 25-18, 20-20, 23-25, 26-24.  Bridgeport moves on with a 21-7 record, and New Haven closes out its season with a 23-7 mark.

Freshman Biljana Savic led Bridgeport with 20 kills, and was joined in double figures by senior Fernanda Costa with one and freshman Larissa Oliveira with 10 kills.

Senior setter Tamara Leite dished out 50 assists for the Purple Knights, and Taylor McBeth  led the Bridgeport defense with 25 digs.

New Haven’s Keidy Candelaria led all players with 25 kills.

After winning the first two sets, and seeing the Chargers battle back to take set three, the Purple Knights rallied to score six consecutive points to win the deciding fourth set, 26-24.
